Algorithm Charter for Aotearoa New Zealand
A voluntary charter, launched in 2020, under which signatory public sector agencies commit to transparency and accountability in how they use algorithms, including embedding te ao Māori perspectives.
Published by Stats NZ.
What it asks for
- Be transparent about where and how algorithms are used, in plain English.
- Embed a te ao Māori perspective in the development and use of algorithms.
- Keep humans accountable for decisions, with a clear route for people to challenge one.
- Be clear about the trade-offs and the data behind a decision.
What we do about it
- We write the plain-English description of what a system does as part of the build, not afterwards.
- We keep a human in the loop wherever a decision affects a person, and we make the review step real rather than a rubber stamp.
- We document the data a system uses and what it does not use.

The other frameworks we build to
This is a plain description of what these frameworks ask for and how we build to them. It is not legal advice, and it is not a claim of endorsement, accreditation or partnership. Where a framework governs your organisation, take your own advice on it.
